When they say shortage- keep in mind it may be in areas you're
not interested in, but there are shortages. Right now here in
SoCal any desert outside of L.A. is hurting for teachers because
of urban sprawl. In L.A. they're hurting because everyone thinks
it is one vast, gang infested, unsafe area to work in (mind you,
some of the areas are bad, some good) and the commute is pretty
bad (2 hours there 2 hours back from 30 miles away.) Math and
Science teachers: secondary level have a ticket to pretty much
any school district they want. Spec. Ed teachers, and
Speech/Language pathologists are also free to look pretty much
anywhere here. The pay can be great- I'm on the 3rd step of the
farthest column (masters + 70) making just over 50,000... but the
trade off is... good luck finding more than a dog house to live
in for under 1500 a month. (Median price of homes 500,000 +
here). Flip side: a fellow I just worked with this year decided to go to
Arkansas with his single subject in science. He'll be making as
much there as he made here. Cost of living is wayyyyyy lower
there. Don't give up. Good luck.
