I teach a high school senior modern lit class where kids get to pick from 4 novels to read each unit (fiction, non fiction, plays, and short stories). Ive had trouble monitoring kids in their small group discussions, and as soon as I leave, they get off topic. Sometimes it's b/c they don't read; other times it's because they don't know how to dig deep.

I always have them turn something in as a formative assessment.

Does anyone have a series of lessons that are general enough that I could use for all novels?

The cumulative assignment is an analysis paper where I ask them to trace the evolution of a character and discuss how the diction helps to demonstrate their change.

I'm open to any recommendations that are managable!
