Re: Dibels reading assess.
Posted by been there, done that on 2/11/06

    Darlene,
Bitter much? I must have missed something. Have you posted here
frequently and been treated rudely? I am fairly new to this board and
may be out of the loop. Did someone here critcize you for staying
home with your kids? I stayed home with mine, too. 20 years.

I think you are probably a great parent. You are concerned for your
children and want the best. You are frustrated because you don't
always (or maybe even often) get it. You will make sure your children
get what they need and homeschool them, if that is what it takes. I
applaud you-- the world needs more parents like you--for taking your
job seriously. I say that with all sincerity.

You want the best for your gifted children, and until you have taught
22 children in a room alone, trying to meet state and federal
standards, deal with behavior problems, low performing children,
gifted children, unidentified special needs children, state mandated
testing, and everything else under the sun, you will never understand
why your child didn't get what you wanted.

I am a teacher--I love it and I am also very good at it. I love
meeting the needs of "my" children. I love the parents. And I am
frustrated by it. I am trying my hardest to give every child what he
needs and meet the expectations of the parents, district, principal,
and the legislature. And I am overworked and overwhelmed by it. I am
at school a minimum of 11 hours a day just to keep up. I work 1/2 day
on Saturdays. I am not a surgeon, I am a kindergarten teacher, and
somehow it doesn't seem like it should be that complicated.

I know for a fact that it isn't that complicated when you homeschool.
I, too, had a gifted child who was falling through the educational
cracks at a PRIVATE school. I have been in your shoes and I chose to
homeschool 11 years. The benefits are amazing and it was the best
thing I've ever done. I am not bitter about it, why are you?

I am wondering why you are reading a Building Blocks chatboard made
up of kindergarten teachers and appear to be looking for a fight. Do
you actually think they have the power to change the system if they
just tried harder? Do you want to feel vindicated, or do you just want
to kick the people who didn't meet your expectations with their stupid
system? I suggest addressing a letter to the legislature instead.
You won't get any better results, but at least they hold the power.

I am committed to public education. I work in a Title I school by
choice. There are things that drive me crazy about this system and I
let my voice be heard about it. Every child deserves the best
education possible and I am determined to do my best. Despite my
intentions and hard work I won't be able to meet everyones' needs. I
lose sleep over it, but I only have so much to give.

Do you like it when public school teachers go into homeschooling
forums and tell them what a bad job they are doing (and you know as
well as I do that there are some who are doing a bad job of it) and
that they are just a bunch of dumb stay-at-home moms? I am sorry for
your bad experiences. There are good teachers and bad teachers, just
as there are good homeschoolers and bad ones. That is always going to
    be true.

You are welcome here. Please be polite.
