    We use Dibels with our kindergarteners. In the fall you
    would test letter naming fluency ( they get a sheet of over
    100 letters and they have to name as many as they can in one
    minute) and initial sound fluency ( 4 pictures on a page --
    point to the picture that begins with ___). In winter you
    test the 2 above plus phoneme segmetation ( you say a word
    and they have to break it into each sound : for example ,
    you say leaned they have to say /l/ /e/ /n/ /d/ they do not
    get to look at the word) and nonsense word fluency ( they
    have to read words such as um and zeb.) All test get 1
    minute . In the spring they test on everything except
    initial sounds ( it is over in the winter). LEtter naming I
    beleive they have to be at 50 in the spring to benchmark (in
    1 minute) Phoneme segmentation they have to get 45 sounds
    and nonsense words they have to get 25.

    The test takes alot of class time preparing (practicing
    segmenting, reading the letters quickly, reading nonsense
    words ect) We usually review during small groups. To me
    the test isn't that informative. Some of my lower children
    scored high on initial sounds because they guesseed really
    fast and got more done in 1 minute. Also, I have children
    that have a hard time with the letter naming but can sound
    out great. The nonsense words are hard for your readers
    becasue they don't make sense (and we spend a lot of time
    saying does that make sense when we are learning to read) I
    also have ESL students that show NO progress on the test but
    that are making progress in the room.
