Wow. It makes our kids (and teachers) crazy!
This can be used as a tool BUT it is being misused all over the place. Schools and
teachers are being evaluated based on this. Kids are being retained based on it.
The one minute time sounds great because we are all short on time, but it actually takes
much longer than that. It also doesn't allow students to actually read---it just chops it
up into little parts. Reading is working ALL those parts at the same time or it doesn't
make sense and they don't comprehend.
I find DRA or some other form of running record to be more helpful. The Observation
Survey (from Reading Recovery) is more helpful for K & 1.
The selections are not on grade level and there is no introduction. Even if I don't
understand mechanics and someone hands me a manual about cars, I have some idea
about the contents---I have context to use to read it. With DIBELS just gives the kids a
page of words.
They claim that fluency is the key to it all, but too often we get kids who just call out
those words as fast as they can. Too much class time is spent teaching how to DIBEL
instead of just how to read and write.
It's just not all that good. Most of the time, we have to give another assessment (like
the DRA) to find out what we need to work on.
