Friends of mine have children who attend a school that really focusses on character education. The parents wanted to make a school/home connection, so each month when the kids came home with information about the "character trait of the month", the parents took action. They would focus on the character trait and look for it in other family members during the month. They would fill a jar with slips of paper, recording each time they saw kindness, or honestly, whatever the trait. At the end of the month, the all of them would come up with a family reward for all their hard effort. I was so impressed with the way the family helped make that learning connection for their kids. I would like to encourage "family character jars" at my school.
Melissa I love that idea. I think it could even be used within the classroom in order to promote character in students and with the teacher. On 6/21/11, K. Every week I put a new word and definition on the board, like kindness, courage, forgiveness, decisiveness, determination, tolerance, then at dinner we each...See More
