Re: My own child bitten today..Questions for daycare workers

I used to work in daycares. Now, I am lucky enough to teach
3rd grade in a school district. Daycare teachers love their
students but its not like being at home with your own kids.
There are lots of infants and toddlers in a room, often with
only a few overworked, under paid adults. Biting happens so
much in daycare and kids are crying so much that its
overwelming. Daycare teachers can't stop everything just for
one child like you can at home. I'm sure they would have
stopped the biting if they had seen it happen. They may have
comforted your child and then forgotten about it because
toddlers cry so much and haven't developed communication
skills to tell what happened.
Daycare teachers don't get paid much at all, sometimes only 8-
9 dollars an hour and they get no respect. You really should
call them daycare "teachers" instead of "workers". Calling
them workers makes it sound as though they are not as
importent as high school teachers.
If you are really concerned, think about getting a nanny or
au pair to care for your child at home. They are much more
expensive than daycare but you get what you pay for!
Personally, I leave my son with mom while I work. But I am
very lucky that my mom is willing to care for him all day and
for free! If I didn't have my mom, I would stay home with
him. We would have to live in an apartment rather than a
house and would not have extra luxeries on my husband's
salary alone. But it would be worth it not to have to leave
my child in an overcrowed daycare.
