Ideally, maybe 5 years?

In the real world? Probably much longer than that. My
computer lab's computers were replaced 3 years ago with
refurbished computers that were donated. They work ok, but are
showing signs of their age. They're slowing down and are
visibly showing their age. There's just no money to do
anything with them or to replace them. I really think they'd
benefit from being completely wiped clean and only install
minimal software on them, but there's no one to do that either
(IT is severely understaffed).

Before these "new" computers, I swear the computers in my lab
were at least 10 years old. It took about 20 minutes for them
to boot up. If a computer froze during class, there wasn't
enough time to reboot. The student was done for the day.
