You are most likely talking about a "text box".
Go to the "Insert" drop down menu, find "Text Box" and pick
one that you like. You can position it anyplace you'd like as
well as resizing to suit your purpose.
You might also be trying to use a table - you can make table
cells any size you want, you can change the color inside
individual cells and change the color of the text to anything
you like.
If you already have your black box and just want white text -
highlight the text and simply change it to white - black is
default color.
