Wow.. 2 hours a week is a long time for pre-k. I reduced my
time with pre-K to 30 minutes a week and I really think it is
perfect. It is much more important that the kids learn pro
social skills rather tahn how to use a computer.
However, when I did have the pre-k longer I used a lot of
activities that were not using the computer. For example, we
colored a picture of a computer mouse then chose a sticker to
go over the spot where the kids need to click. I read
Arthur's Computer Disaster and we talked about the importance
of following rules. We made Huggly headband hats to wear
while playing Huggly saves the Turtles. Before playing a
game in which that have to click and drag objects from
littlest to biggest, we took turns ordering real life objects
like books and stuffed animals to make sure everyone
understood the terms.
Another thing, if you have a smartboard you can do whole
group lesson before letting them use the computer to stretch
out the time.
Even take breaks and do finger stretches.
I would hold off on letting them play games as long as
possible because once you start, that is all they will want
to do.
