How to handle students with ipods and electronics

A problem in many schools are students who wear their ipod headphones or text in class- ive seen students who act as if their ipods are a part of their anatomy- tell them to put it away, they always take their phones back out.

Can anyone suggest the most effective way of dealing with the problem of distracting student electronics? Nearlly every school has a no telerance policy to the ipods and texting, but the lewel and manner in which the problem is dealt with varies

Although you state your school has a zero tolerance policy, what is the school wide policy when students are found to be violating such policy? My school has a tired system. The first time a student is caught using a device, the teacher sends it to the office and students may get it back at the end of the day. The second time a student violates this policy by using it for anything other than learning (with teacher's permission), a parent/guardian must pick up the phone. The third time the student does not get the phone back until the end of the school year. While this may seem extreme, this policy is well outlined in our code of conduct handbook and students and parents must also sign a BYOD contract that outline the use of such devices and the consequences when student violate this policy. Moreover, we have code of conduct meetings at the start of each school year with all students. Part of this meeting speaks to the BYOD policy.

As a future administrator, I would strongly discourage any teacher from embarrassing a student such as stating what music the student was listening to. Furthermore, by even suggesting that a teacher might look at photos or read texts potentially positions the teacher to be accused of violating students rights, even if the teacher is only joking.

If the problem persists with the same students, a phone call home explaining to the parent/guardian the school's policy might also be effective. Thoughts?
