I teach math for the county's online high school and we get paid per student. Right now I only have 2 students enrolled in the course. I'm new onboard, but from what I've heard, this is common for the second semester.

While I have the course material up and ready to go, we still have to have office hours at least 2x a week and I'll have to drive about 35 mi one way to administer the midterm and final. Even though a colleague said she'd sit there with my students, the administrator wants us to have the face time.

I'm considering not teaching the next semester with all of this to take into consideration. I will teach in the summer and Fall, but I'm thinking for less than $500 (before taxes), it's not worth it.

Any thoughts?

marjoryt I don't think that would be an unreasonable request, since you have taught the course online, the final exam would probably be online, and conceivably you've been talking to the student a few times via telephone. A person to person meeting for just a final exam is pretty ridiculous - much, much, much better to have that face to face the first week ...See More

rw I sure would. I teach writing. Only having to grade 2 student's essays instead of 15-30 for the same exact amount of money... what is there to say no about?

It could be a difficult class to teach though. I mean, imagine if 1 student dropped-- or both! Or one or both were out sick... I would want to be ensured I'd get paid anyway.

rw I wasn't noticing the pay. I was assuming the same pay regardless of number of students per course. LO

treetoad I had a son whose college course was dropped because there were not enough students - it was the only course offered in his area thus he had to wait a semester so I'd say please offer the course.
