Re: Illiterate high school students
Yes, this is definitely happening all over - and not just in English
classes. It carries over into trying to teach FL as well, especially at
the lower levels when students realize they have to study, memorize, and
practice to pass the class - plus actually LEARN the material to function
properly! Even though FL teachers tend to get more motivated students,
we still see our share of ones who cannot function properly in English.
I remember doing MS Spanish years ago (mid 90's) to a group of 7th
graders reading on a 3rd/4th grade level (several in the class) who were
forced to take the class - and it was astounding to me that they weren't
allowed to take more English/reading/language arts instead since they
obviously needed that more! Imagine the fun I had trying to teach how to
ocnjugate verbs! NCLB has done so many a disservice in my opinion by
seeing testing as the be all/end all to achievement and learning. I
agree there needs to be accountability but whatever happened to
remembering education is a continual process and people learn at
different rates?
