My experience as a public school, 5th grade teacher has been
very joy-filled and challenging at the same time. I enjoy
the age of 5th graders because they have usually not yet
begun to deal with puberty and hormones; they are still naive
about many things; they understand (most of the time) how to
work independently and what school expects of them; and they
are generally amicable and happy to come to school. The real
challenges for me have been the older students that have
failed at least one grade or sometimes two. These children
infiltrate the peace of dormant hormones and cause issues
that would have otherwise come up in middle school. I have a
middle school certification, so I know how to handle them, but
the average 10 year old does not, so bullying has been a
problem that I address often. If you choose to teach in
private schools, this will usually not be a problem. If you
teach in public, you can COUNT on these problems. Hope this
helps
