Does your school have a reading series it uses? Is it phonics based? Do you require students to read at a certain DRA level to enter first and to promote from first? We have a series I like, but others are saying our phonics is weak, we have too many struggling readers....thinking about changing and need your thoughts please.

Polly We use leveled books to teach reading and supplement it with a phonics program called Zoophonics which includes spelling. It is a wonderful program! Google it...you will love it.

jo/ma For phonics and spelling, we use a modified version of the Wilson Program. For reading, we use Harcourt Trophies stories, Scholastic News, and Benchmark Books.

jo/ma (more) I'm in a low income, high ELL district and the Wilson Program really works well. My district tends to modify everything to suit our particular needs. For reading, we go by the standards. The district gives us a skeleton list of stories we must do for each standard, but leaves us lots of time for readings of our own choosing.

Brittany We use a reading series called Scott Foresman's Reading Street. We also use a phonics program called Saxon Phonics. I strongly believe in the Saxon program and believe it helps children learn how to read. Also websites such as starfall.com are helpful with phonics practice!
