Hi Jason. I've been teaching Health and Phys.Ed. for 25 years. Teaching
is a noble profession, but it is not for the faint of heart. You do need
book smarts... especially if you are going to teach Health, which most
PE teachers do; and depending on what you would be teaching, you will
need very specific information on various activities. You also need the
ability to handle "organized chaos" which is what PE classes look like
to other teachers:)You will need a teaching degree... my student teacher
last year was majoring in kinesiology to become a PE teacher. You have
to be very organized and very flexible. Crowd control and the ability to
change plans at the last minute are a must. Depending on where you would
get a job, don't expect to be very high "on the totem pole" and expect
to hear the old "those who can't teach teach phys.ed." jokes. However, I
would challenge anyone at my school to do my job for a week... I think
they'd have a much greater appreciation. It's not just "rolling out the
ball". Lots of people think it's easy, but it is not. Learning how to
get and keep someone's attention, how to teach so kids will listen... it
comes from the heart, but it takes practice. I think I am a much better
teacher now... experience is the best teacher after all! I wish you the
best in your adventure.
