When I began teaching in spceial education in 1975, I was in a small classroom with all types of students from learning disabled, mentally retarded, and even emotionally disturbed. I was assisted by one paraprofessional. I wrote the students individual educational plans based on a criterion-referenced tested, the Brigance. As the years progressed, the education community began placing more students with certain handicapping conditions into their own room one room for LD, one room for MR, behavior units for ED. Then inclusion came along and the students were returned to the regular classroom as much as possible. I was an inclusion teacher who co-taught with the regular teacher. I retired a year ago and inclusion still seems to be the in thing
