I'm librarian at a middle school. I was told today that it
is illegal to have a written record of the students
usernames and passwords for the student computer accounts.
In our district there is no password recovery ability for
the students. So, when the students forget their passwords,
a teacher (in my case it's almost always me) has to email a
request for a password reset to our helpdesk. Then we wait
anywhere from 5 minutes to about 24 hours for a reply.
Finally, we have to notify the student of their new
temporary password and tell them what to do. To avoid
having to do this time-consuming process as much, we have a
formula for the password each year such as a 6-digit
birthday. I also keep a card for each student with this
password on it. I was told today that it is illegal by a
teacher. He thinks we should have the student make their
password anything they want. That's fine, but my way I can
remind the student that their password follows the
predetermined guideline such as a birthday. I'm curious if
he is right. Thank you.
