Wringer by Spinelli - but be forewarned - the meaty issue is the treatment of animals and children can be upset by the idea that there are indeed people who treat animals poorly. The Breadwinner - great book about a girl who must pretend to be a boy to help her family survive in Afghanistan under the Taliban.
