Here are some more ideas:

Riding Freedom (about 4th grade level- historical fiction-
some more difficult vocabulary, but the plot is pretty easy
to follow) Skellig (officially a 4.5 reading level, you can
read this one just for the surface story or really dig into
the symbolism) Love That Dog (poetry) Marley & Me: A Dog Like
No Other (There will be interest in this because the movie
just came out. Make sure you get the kid's version, not the
adult one!) When Mack Came Back (another dog story!)
