A few years ago I held 'literature discussion circles' with 2nd
graders and some of the books they could choose from to read
for themselves were :
Ralph S Mouse
A Mouse Called Wolf
Frekle Juice
Marvin Redpost
Trickster Ghost
Haunted House
of course The Hundred Dresses
amongst a few other
These were not only advanced students, but any student who
wanted to give it a go...they could read it to themselves, have
it read to them, or even listen to it on tape, they were
responsible for getting the words in their heads so that when
it came to discussion time they were all prepared.
I then had them put the books away and asked interpretive
questions (no right/wrong, not AR type) to draw higher level
thinking responses from what they had read.
Good luck !
