It's been a long time since I read the book, so bear with me.
Both the main characters are social misfits and create
their own world as a means of escape...How loose are you
going to be with your art lesson--could it be as simple as
you explaining that if they (the students) could create their
ideal/utopian world what would it be, look like, be
inhabited by, what foods would they eat, etc. Start by
having the kids brainstorm: List at least 15 things, draw
thumbnail (very small) sketches of your creatures, etc. One
website that I really love is princetonal.com--lots of great
lessons, ideas, starters, etc. How creative are your
students going to be: Make a diorama, create a scrapbook,
build a house from this world, etc. Best of all--have fun!!!
I loved this book when I was young--so I hope you post your
results...I would love to see them. If you have any
questions, e-mail me--I'm an art teacher.
