I don't know anything about Lamar, but did complete a master's
from a state university online. Don't kid yourself--it took
just as much time and effort to do it as one on campus did (the
online master's was my second one; my district has a +30
scale). The only thing easier is that there is no drive to
campus. Because of this, profs put on a bit more work, because
they knew we had the time. I was spending anywhere from 8-20
hours per week on the coursework, depending on the needs, easy.
Still, I found it to be a very worthwhile experience. Not only
did I learn the material, but my technology skills increase
tenfold.
I would make sure the program you are looking into is
accredited by the NCATE, etc.....otherwise, people may question
the degree's qualifications. This happened to a teacher in my
district, in her last semester, central office said the degree
would not count for advancement. Do your homework here.
And make sure to rule out any state university near you. Many
state universities are realizing the market, and making the
program online, or via web conferencing and the like. Again,
do your homework to rule out all possibilities....there is
something in the name of the institution, like it or not, in
our society.
Good luck!
