I am going out of my mind with chronic attendance problems. I teach 10th grade college prep English. I keep a make up notebook and write what we did each day and add any handouts; I post homework online. But I still have parents complaining that I'm not doing enough to help their little darlings keep up. One girl tries to DEMAND my constant attention in class because she was not there and does not understand what we are doing! It's agonizing!

Before you post about the swine flu...it's the same kids who have been absent 1 or 2 days per week since September. It's not the swine flu!!!!! It's the lazy flu!!!!
MelissafromVA I would keep doing what you are doing with the notebook, plus set aside one day after school (or before school, depending on what time your day begins) for helping students who have been absent. If the students do not attend, inform their parents that they did not attend, and don't waste too much of the other students' time answering those question...See More

good luck Some kids hate school - I was one of them. We're all very different as people but school is pretty much the same wherever you do and you spend most of your day sitting still or trying to. Be specific in your questions to parents - tell them what you're going but ask what else comes to their mind that could possibly be done to help chronically absen...See More
