I, too, teach a combination of 1/2. When introducing a mini- lesson or teaching a skill, I have my other students listen to the stories on CD. They can listen and read along to one or two (ten minutes), and then I switch the groups and teach the other. I also use routine things like a journal of the questions at the end of each story and the practice worksheets as independent activities. Keeping things as routine as possible helps.
