I taught K/1 this year for the first time and it was a ride!!
Only now when there is time for reflection can I see the
positives but in the midst of it I was overwhelmed! Writing
and reading workshops were the trickiest to develop but were
also the most successful. I had to let go of my "teacher
control" and trust the students more which was scary. The
independence of the kinders was much higher than in my
traditional classroom of the past and the depth of dialogue
from the first graders was more genuine and self-directed than
the past.
This summer my teaching partner and I will take time to look
deeper at the two curriculums in order to blend them more
authentically next year.
What type of multi-age classroom do you hope to create?
