Re: Any one-room school teachers?
Posted by islandgirl on 7/07/07

    Hi,
I also teach grades 3-6 in a two room school house. I also use reading circles and
writing workshop to teach reading and language arts. Math is the only subject that I
teach from leveled textbooks, although I do use leveled readers for guided reading
instruction. For science and social studies, I have developed units based on some of the
curriculum and content that kids are expected to know when they get out of
elementarry school. Then I set up a rotating curriculum. Every three years i teach these
unit. So for instance, one year we may really focus on our community, the next our
state and the last US history and geography. I have to scaffold the lessons in each of
the units for the different grade levels, so fifith graders may be responsible for more
research while the third grades are getting a broader overview integrating skills that i
want them to be getting. It does take a while to set it all up and i am alsways changing
and tweeking depending on the dynamics of how many in each grade level but it is still
alot easier than trying to teach three different curriculums each day. I would be happy
to correspond more with you and am curious about where you are.
