A detention is not a very strong punishment-too bad you have
such a spineless administrator who won't do more. But, I
think you are punishing yourself much more than the student.
I would want to move on and not have to face a disgruntled
student day after day. I think sentences are good. I don't
like punishing students with activities that we, as physical
educators, are trying to involve students in. I would assign
a health research paper discussing the dangers of exposed
bodily fluids. I would also involve the parents--call them
and tell them exactly what their child said. Hopefully they
will be shocked and back you up. Do not let this boy get away
with ANYTHING in class--no pushing, no spitting, no name
calling--get all over him for every infraction he makes. And
call his parents each time this occurs. Document heavily.
Discuss his behavior with his other teachers to see if he is
trouble in other classes and document what they said. If he
is disrespectful to others mention this in the phone calls.
This sends a strong message to the boy and to the others in
your classes.
On the other side of the coin, you can contact parents to tell
them what a great job their kid is doing and word spreads
about that, too, among the students!
Good luck.
