By 4th they are ready for some competition and enjoy it.

Try these:

Newcomb: a game to play before volleyball as most don't have
the coordination for passing the ball. Server throws the ball
over the net, The opponents catch the ball and may throw it
to another team member or directly over (builds better team
work if you require 2-3 touches per side) I begin by counting
and calling out: " Catch it, one, two (as they throw to
teammate) three, (to another team mate)and OVER" Then the
opponents catch and throw three times until someone drops or
does not catch on one side. Point awarded just like VB.

Basket bowl. Materials: one hula hoop, two basketballs, BB
court, hoops. 4 bowling pins or big soda bottles.

Divide the class into two teams and line each team on a
sideline. Each member has a number, if uneven, give one kid two
numbers. Put the hula hoop in the middle of the basketball
court with two basketballs inside. Put two pins at each free
throw line on opposite corners. Place one student, who's
number you WON't call first, behind their team's bowling line.
Call out a number, Each team sends representative to pick up
BB, go to Free throw line and bowl the pins over. Person
behind shags the ball so the game goes quicker. First bowler
to knock pins over dribbles down to other end and shoots
baskets. THe one who did not hit the pins first goes to their
line and is the "timer;" they pass the ball to each person in
line. Back and forth to bowler. When passing is done, no more
baskets count. You may need to move the bowling foul line up
depending upon the skills of your students.
