My goal is to

By definition a token economy only provides extrinsic
motivation. Intrinsic motivation is far more difficult to
achieve but I find I do best with that when what I'm trying to
do is see that each day in my classroom is a good day for
students. I don't sit around dreaming up trick questions for
tests but put my energy into having a well-planned and
interesting lesson plan. Each night I plan... and think - what
can we do tomorrow that will teach the concept in a way that
will interest them?
Your manner can go a long way towards motivating students - do
you enjoy your subject? Let them see that. What is fascinating
about your subject? Teach it that way.
People are what motivates other people. People respond to
people. Whether that's intrinsic or extrinsic doesn't matter as
much - if students look forward to your class, you're doing
something right and they can't help but learn something too.
