Jeff,
Have you looked into applying for a TA position in history or
Psych? they don't pay well, but they carry a waiver so you would
not be paying tuition.
Academia right now is a tough nut to crack...even major research
universities are using more instructors and adjuncts instead of
tenure track faculty. Being a public school teacher is just as
good or better than either one of those in terms of stability and
even pay.
Make sure you REALLY want a doctorate before you start the
program. I don't know much about part time programs bc mine is in
science. Writing a dissertation AND working fulltime outside of
the college plus any family/life things is very difficult. Good luck!
