Look with universities and colleges deciding to be the equivalent of
national labs, research institutes, business incubators and
professors being pushed and rewarded for such activities, it is
really getting hard to keep professors engaged in what would seem to
be their primary mission - the education of undergraduate and to
acknowledge their status as a teaching institution. I really think
the buzz word for many today should be a university of higher
business and not higher education. Sad all around for the parents
paying the big bucks, the college students who just don't realize
what they ought to be getting and the college profs who do decided to
teach first and do business later. You gotta have skills to offer an
employer and somebody has got to be willing to put time and effort
into teaching those skills and somehow showing up to not only recite,
but at times even write out 30 year old notes almost verbatim does
not crack it - and I am talking about engineering and not the social
sciences.
