Don't underestimate the power of reading out loud; they're probably
taking in more than you think, like the way you speak and the words
you are saying. I agree that teaching them noun/verb/adjective at
this point isn't helpful. What's important is getting them to
understand and participate. If you can learn more about how their
language works, you can better help them understand standard
American English, and maybe work on some code switching, especially
if their village uses a dialect of English mixed with their native
language. It's really important not to undermine their native
culture and way of speaking, but to show them how to communicate
clearly in Standard AE when it's necessary. Sherman Alexi is a
great suggestion!
