The LIPS (auditory discrimination in depth) is a great
program to stengthen phonemic/phonological awarentss. They
also put out a program called "Seeing Stars" which is worth
taking a look at. Both programs primarily use nonsense
words, which are very important to ensure that students are
using decoding strategies to figure out a word rather than
guessing through the over-use of context clues, word shape,
or word parts. These are bad habits that you see many
struggling readers habitually use. Do you know how many
times you have to correct a student's bad reading habit
before the correction becomes second nature?
Barton is also a good one. I don't think Road to the Code is
comprehensive enough. I always had to use other
supplementary interventions with it in order to cover all the
bases.
Good Luck,
Nicole
