I am in CT and finished my Remedial Reading 102 certificate in
2009. I worked as as a Literacy Coach/Specialist from 2007-
2011. My principal allowed the reading staff to be
abused/ignored by the classroom teachers. It is a tough job
because you're not an administrator but you have to make
decisions that affect the entire school and this leads to
resentment. A lot of teachers resented the fact we didn't
have our own classes and had more free time to read, research,
write curricula, etc. Teachers would sometimes leave the room
when I was supposed to be coaching them. But if I were in the
right situation, it would be my dream job. I love working
with the different age groups in a school, coaching teachers
looking to improve their instruction, schoolwide assessment,
and small group remediation.
It all depends on the district and principal you work for. Go
for it. Even if you stay in your current position the 102
makes you a better teacher. I went to Sacred Heart in
Fairfield and the program was great, extremely rigorous with 2
clinical sessions that really prepared me to diagnose and
correct reading problems. Be warned you will have to teach in
front of other educators in a clinic to get your 102 at any
university in CT now.
