Re: safety goggles vs safety glasses
    Nan

I think it depends on your purpose and what types of chemicals you
use. Goggles are called splash goggles because if something splashes
you in the face, it won't slide down your forehead and into your
eyes. You do not have the same protection with safety glasses.

Safety glasses are impact resistant, but they are not splash
resistant. As long as all your chemicals are harmless, there is
nothing wrong with wearing safety glasses instead of goggles.

If you aren't sure about the chemicals you are using, check out their
MSDS. If they say chemical splash goggles are required and you don't
have the students wearing them, then you are liable if something
    happens.

I personally have my students wear goggles. Do they complain? Of
course, but you just do it. I probably tell two or three kids every
lab to get those goggles on. As long as you consistently reinforce
your expectations, you shouldn't have any problems.

Also on the "industry" experience. You have to think about what
chemicals you were using and the experience of the staff. I too wore
safety glasses when I worked in industry, but we did most of our work
in a fume hood with the sash down so that if something went wrong it
didn't get in our eyes. We also put on a full face shield when
working with more hazardous chemicals. I would error on the side of
caution. If someone got hurt and a law suit was filed, I'd make sure
that I wasn't going to get targeted.
