"Read, Write and Type" is the best software for younger
kids -- it teaches phonics and reading at the same time.
Nowadays it's possible to get a cheap version online at
amazon, for example.

Those old versions will run fine on modern Windows computers
if you download the patch that the publisher has on their
website. I did this for a computer lab and got great
software for around $5 a pop, though it was extra work to
install the patch.
