Quality of education varies depending on the social, economic, and political factors involved. Today, the the greatest failure of the public school system is its inability to help underprivileged students escape the cycle of poverty. From firsthand experience, I know that a teacher’s best intentions cannot possibly succeed without the support of the students’ parents. Students whose parents lack the time or education to help them apply the information they learn in the classroom often perform worse than their peers with access to more economically stable home environments. In order to remedy this issue, schools should allocate more resources to struggling schools so that those students can receive the same opportunities as their affluent peers. Additionally, schools should participate in after school programs that provide mentors or other types of support for students who would benefit from a more stable environment to complete their homework or receive extra help.
