Dear DeAnne,
I don't know how "vagabond" you are in your travel, but I can
tell you from my own experience that it is not difficult to
find places to stay. We NEVER make reservations except for
the first and last nights of our stay. All the others are
found as we go. You may not save any money that way, but you
certainly get to pick those places that appeal to you when
you see them.
Also, if you want to get outside the city and into the rural
areas I highly recommend renting a car. It isn't cheap, but
these days neither is taking a train. One summer we made
a "rule" for our travel: every time we would come to an
intersection we would turn onto the smallest road. It took
us to some wonderful, off the track places and showed us the
way the people really live. We found little tiny inns with
delightful hosts and delicious home-prepared meals. If you
think you can travel a little loosy-goosy, I recommend it!
Have a great trip!
