High Performance is geared for maximum performance and
responsiveness. It burns right through the battery though, so
if you do a lot of work unplugged, you might want to switch
your power plan to "power saver" mode during those times. I
just carry my cord with me!
Another thing you can check that would improve your performance
is to see what programs are running that aren't needed. In
Vista, the sidebar is a memory hog. Windows Media Player is a
huge memory hog too. There are also a lot of "little"
unnecessary programs that run too that can add up to using memory.
Finally, periodically do a disk cleanup - not a scandisk, but
just a simple disk cleanup, and then delete whatever it comes
up with.
