What 3rd graders read varies from community to community and
from child to child. It's not uncommon for parents to want to
see their children doing more complex work in any subject and
keeping parents feeling comfortable and yet working with the
kids at their comfort level is a delicate balance.
I'd say keep lots of different books in your classroom library.
Keep an eye out for simpler chapter books. Those kids that are
ready to read chapter books certainly should be.
Your post isn't clear as to what the parents want of you - to
switch up your classroom reading? Usually schools assign
certain books to be read and you can always tell parents, "This
is a district decision but I keep many chapter books in the
classroom library and Susan is welcome to take those books home
for all of her independent reading."
