I teach low-level 6th grade readers with some of the read
naturally selections. The key is to approach it differently
each time, but still complete the timed reading the same
way.
Example to get them interested: select 15-20 key words from
the text. Type up, cut out. Hand out, and have them mingle
and try to predict what the topic is.
Or, select phrases from the reading, type up, make cards.
Have them time each other on the reading of the phrases, to
practice phrase fluency.
Or put write one word at a time on the board, have them work
in groups and ring in to take a guess on the topic.
Select and show samples of video clips off the internet (how
potato chips are made) and then have a taste test of potato
chips and graph results.
Always preread the text with the kids and explain that they
must partner up and listen to their partners read, while
they're timed.
The nice thing about Read Naturally is that you can select
topics (somewhat) to go with other math, social studies, or
science related themes!
