The local newspaper donates newspapers so I have a newspaper center with five papers. Sometimes I give a scavenger hunt to go along with the paper. I have a buddy reading "center" where kids read in pairs or threes. Sometimes kids use the center time to do research on a topic we are working on. Our reading series provides all the stories on CD and so kids have the listening center (I am working on really building my audio book collection this summer). Anyone interested in centers for intermediate grades, you might want to look for the book "Practice with Purpose" by Debbie Diller. It has great center suggestions and specific strategies for ensuring their success.
