    Experiment 2 — make a cloud in a jar

This experiment will help to show how clouds form.

For this experiment you will need the following:

A clear jam jar or similar see through container
    Warm water
    Ice
    Small metal dish
    Instructions

Firstly place the ice into the metal dish and put to one
    side.
Take the jar and pour a small amount of the hot water into
    the bottom.
Make sure that the metal dish feels really cold, then
carefully place it on top of the jar.
Watch the inside of the jar carefully.
    What you should see:

You should see a 'cloud' forming near to the top of the jar.

    More about clouds

Clouds in the real world form in a similar way to the one
    created in the jam jar.

Clouds form when warm moist air similar to that trapped in
your jam jar is cooled to such an extent that it becomes
saturated. In this experiment the ice is used to cool the
air, however, in the real world the main cause for cooling
air is to force it to rise. As air rises it expands -
because the pressure decreases through the atmosphere - and
therefore cools. Eventually it may become saturated and the
water vapour then condenses into tiny water droplets,
similar in size to those found in fog, and forms cloud. If
the temperature reaches below about -20 °C, many of the
cloud droplets will have frozen so that the cloud is mainly
    composed of ice crystals.

There are many different types of clouds, to find out more,
check out our clouds information page.
