    Re: Need classroom pet suggestions

Steph, for very low maintenance and 8th graders, you might be
surprised that you and the class will get a kick out of a
snake. I know, I can't believe I'm suggesting this either but
there are good reasons. You don't have to worry about them
before long holidays as you normally feed them only about
every 14 days anyway. It's amazing how easy they are to
handle and girls are usually as impressed as guys are. My
first encounter was when I was junior to high school age (my
cousin kept pet snakes in his bedroom growing up; he was
otherwise very normal and dear. :) I was never a squeamish
type but was surprised that I would even get near it. I still
remember how soft and silky it felt. It may seem odd but I
think you have to learn to be gentle, trustworthy/trusting,
faithful, and have courage to be good with snakes - good
character qualities to encourage in kids. And, they live for
a long time so they sort of become "part of the school,"
something students talk about, and returning students can ask
    about.

Boas and Rat/Corn snakes make great pets. Good pet stores
will help you a lot but here are a couple of web sites that
will give you a feel for taking care of pet snakes ...

"All Boas.com" provides pretty thorough information:
http://www.allboas.com/feeding.php (this guy raises & breeds
a lot of snakes so he has a lot of experience but also spends
more to feed them than you would for just one snake.)

    Rat or Corn snakes:
    http://www.petco.com/caresheets/snakes/Snake_Rat.pdf (not to
advertise a particular store but this has a good overview.)

I used to teach 8th and 9th graders so I know whatever you
    choose, you'll have fun!
