    Post: Blogging About Math

Posted by math AR 4th on 7/10/08

    Hi everyone!
I am a 4th grade math teacher and would like to start a
webpage with math questions realted to different regions
of the USA that we can use to compare data on. I know my
4th graders LOVE to use the comuter any chance they can
get, but there is SUCH a time constraint with "x" amount
of instruction tmie required for each content area. I was
thinking about taking turns posting a question every two
weeks or so and allowing enough class time to have
students work in groups to come up with appropriate
solutions(I am thinking bell work or morning work on
Fridays or something like that- each teacher could decide
the best time to do that). Then,(and again, this is to
your own discretion of how you choose WHO to actually post
the information) allow one or two students to BLOG the
information on our "online journal" so that everyone can
compare results within the differnt regions. It touches
on both math and science strands this way. (AND s.s/
geography if we had enough people to do it!) It also
allows everyone a chance to blog online (if it is done
evry two weeks, students could partner up and take turns,
or one could actually type the results and one could read
results from other schools...) It wouldn't take very long
to do this, and I think the students would get excited
about "incoming blogs". I thought about even makign a
picture of an envelope (like the "you got mail..." and
putting a magnetic strip on back, and everytime their is a
new question we could post it up on the boards and write
the questions under it so students could start thinking
abou their responses. (They would get excited as they see
the envelope on the board in the morning....) Just a
thought....and even if we could not get an EXACT website,
we could just respond through email and make our own
journals to post information in. Anyone interested??? If
so, we can later exchange SCHOOL email addressses (that
keeps us all protected :) and for now you can just respond
to this post. By the way...I am in Arkansas!
