Post: Substitute teachers organizing in Birmingham
Posted by Kervin Fondren on 12/07/08
I am serving as the first President of the Birmingham
Professional Substitute Teachers Alliance working with
certified substitute teachers in the Birmingham City
Schools. The Birmingham City Schools district is one of
the largest urban school districts in Alabama, and yet subs
only get $60 a day with no benefits. I am organizing subs
to meet in January to attain some collective bargaining
efforts to increase benefits and get consistent
professional development training for subs on the table. I
will work closely with the National Substitute Teachers
Alliance, Birmingham Education Association, Alabama
Education Association and the local school board. We need
qualitative substitutes not just a quantity of subs!
Together WE can do more-what do you think???
