"In Demand" is a term used loosely. I am a math teacher, in a
defined "shortage area". This year, however, I don't have a
contract. There were many applicants for each job in each of
the suburban districts I applied to.
Oh sure, there IS a shortage of math/science teachers in the
inner cities. But those same cities, while crying "teacher
shortage", don't even acknowledge the applications they
receive from me. They seem to want graduates of their own
schools/areas.
At least as a science teacher, you probably majored in the
sciences. I was a math major, and am competing with many
accountants, business majors, attorneys, etc. who have a
sudden "interest" in a subject they didn't choose to major in.
The ridiculously low passing Praxis 2 score for math enables
them to do this.
