    Re: Elementary Ed Teacher CT
    Posted by AnneCT on 7/06/08

    Hi Nancy,

I do see a disadvantage for him. 6th grade is considered middle school.
He will need a content area (math, science, history)to be seriously
considered for that age group. Otherwise principals can only have him
teach 6th. He would have to earn a new certification to work past 6th
grade. In fact many districts are looking for a content area degree from
all teachers now. Highly qualified teachers are what districts are
looking for...Masters/praxis/cross certifications all make the district
look stronger... How ever BA's come on the cheap. In this economy, it
might be an advantage. He can attend classes to earn a masters while
    working.

As far as using websites goes...I'd stick to the old fashioned pounding
pavement. Most jobs that may become available are not posted. Teachers
who take leaves for example usually do not tell until the last minute.
The district will pull from candidates on file.

He can be hired up to a couple of days after the school year begins in
any inner-city type population in CT. They get many last minute
students. He will have to go to the board of Ed of each district, go
through a group interview. Shop himself out to all principals by
dropping by and leaving resumes at each school. Many require a demo
lesson. They might have him do one in a summer school class.

There are universities that offer intern programs to get masters
degrees. You are basically an indentured servant to a district assigned
to a school to work where ever needed for the year. (An in house
substitute so to speak.) The district pays his tuition while he takes
classes in the evening. He will have to work like a dog and find a part
time job to eat! It can be done with a supportive family. Since I am
sure he has student taught already he will need to point that out to the
    university.

    Good luck!
