Post: Unpaid child rearing leave in contract but denied! Help!

    Posted by Yarnista on 7/09/08

I just had a baby May 31st and had to take my FMLA
entitlement due to pregnancy complications. I was hoping
to take 2 more months of unpaid childrearing leave which
is in my teachers contract. Well a day before I gave
birth I received the letter to say it was not approved. I
called my union president and she suggested I "beg" the
    personnel director for it.
I am very concerned and don't know what to do as I have
no family here to help me with the baby. My babysitter is
also not ready to take her. The contract states the leave
shall not be unfairly denied. Why is it in our contract
and should they be giving me a reason? Any help is
    appreciated.
